Legislation - NCUIH
Housed on Capitol Hill, the National Council of Urban Indian Health is the only dedicated national organization to educate Congress and the federal government on behalf of American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) living in urban areas. NCUIH is devoted to developing policies that will ensure quality accessible health care for all American Indians and Alaska Natives living in urban communities. We work on behalf of all of urban Indians and provide our member organizations with technical assistance and support when educating policymakers for their individual communities. All of our legislative activities and any activities undertaken as representatives of Urban Indian Health Organizations are carried out based on member feedback and under our Board of Directors' leadership.

NCUIH has incessantly devoted its legislative efforts to preserve and strengthen the Urban Indian Health Program authorized under Title V of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act since our inception in 1998. NCUIH fought to maintain funding for the Urban Indian Health Program despite the past administrations attempt to eliminate the program in the annual federal budget for three years running (2006, 2007 and 2008). With the help of Tribal Leaders, the National Indian Health Board, and the National Congress of American Indians, NCUIH successfully protected the Urban Indian Health Program from attempts to remove its authorizing language, Title V, from IHCIA. We look forward to working with the Obama administration to build upon these successes to fully develop the Urban Indian Health Program. In order to fulfill our mission and comply with our Strategic and Business Plans, NCUIH tracks a number health issues from state regulations to national health care reform efforts.
