New NCUIH Executive Director
The National Council of Urban Indian Health (NCUIH) is pleased to announce the appointment of DShane Barnett (Mandan/Arikara) as its new Executive Director.
Mr. Barnett--a member of the Prairie Chicken clan of the Mandan tribe of the Mandan, Hidatsa, & Arikara Nation of Fort Berthold, North Dakota--comes to NCUIH with a wealth of knowledge and experience in both the urban Native American community as well as in the management of non-profit programs. Prior to this new role at NCUIH, he served as the Director of Planning & Policy for the Native American Health Center, which operates comprehensive medical and dental clinics in San Francisco and Oakland, CA. Likewise, he worked as a program coordinator at both the Inter-Tribal Council of California (Sacramento, CA) and the Native American Youth Association (Portland, OR).
Mr. Barnett, who started officially working at NCUIH on January 17, 2011, joins NCUIH at one of the most exciting and critical times for the Native American population living off reservations across the United States. The recent passage of the Health Care Reform legislation and its stemming policies have brought about changes with a tremendous potential to impact the urban Indian communities in a positive way.
Please join us in welcoming Mr. Barnett to our organization!
