Urban Indian Health Programs
The National Council of Urban Indian Health is the only membership organization for all of the Urban Indian Health Programs across the country. There are currently 36 Urban Indian
Health Programs (UIHPs), as well as 3 National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) programs that are part of the Indian Health Service and administered by the Office of Urban Indian Health Programs. All 39 of these
health facilities are eligible members of NCUIH.
UIHPs provide a wide array of health services to approximately 332,000 American Indians and Alaska Natives living in 41 urban cities. Most of the programs are comprehensive health
care clinics and offer direct care services including medical, dental, behavioral, alcohol/substance abuse treatment, diabetes and nutrition services, elder care, maternal and child health, etc. The truly unique aspect of UIHPs is their
ability and willingness to provide medical services that incorporate traditional practices into everyday treatment and promote balance between physical, mental, behavioral, and spiritual health. The knowledge of and respect for the
distinct culture of patients is what sets the Urban Indian Health Programs health care services apart from other health care providers.
